Mood Music Redux

Okay, here's another music themed meme. I'll do a random list like the other.

Tell us your favorite songs/types of music for...

1. Getting in the mood to party: "Love Me or Hate Me" by Lady Sovereign

Funny! I love this: "Love me or hate me, it's still an obsession, love me or hate me, that is the question, if you love me then Thank You, if you hate me then Fuck You"

2. When you're depressed: "The Last Thing On My Mind" by Neil Diamond

Wow, that's fittin'. "Well I could have loved you better, I didn't mean to be unkind, You know that was, The last thing on my mind."

3. When you're in lust: "Saved By Zero" by the Fixx

Okay, that is just weird.

4. Exercising: "Morningside" by Neil Diamond

Not good for exercising at all. Too slow.

5. Driving/riding in the car: "Never There" by Cake

That's pretty good.

Update: I decided to go ahead and make the same list, but not with songs randomly selected for me. Here is my intentional list:

1. Getting in the mood to party: "Sexy Back" by Justine Timberlake

I love this song and it always puts me in a better mood.

2. When you're depressed: "Black" by Pearl Jam OR "Sweet Caroline" by Neil Diamond

The first is what I listen to if I want to sink as low as possible, but the second is what I listen to if I want a pick-me-up.

3. When you're in lust: "Sexual Healing" by Marvin Gaye

"And when I get that feeling
I want Sexual Healing"

4. Exercising: "Love Rollercoaster" by the Ohio Players

Not too fast, not too slow.

5. Driving/riding in the car: "Panama" Van Halen

"Ain't nothin like it, her shiny machine.
Got the feel for the wheel, keep the moving parts clean."

Here's my thought-out list. I'll try a random one when I have the iPod nearby.

1. Getting in the mood to party: Sultans of Swing by Dire Straits. Dates back to my college days.
2. When you're depressed: Have You Seen Her? by the Chi-lites. Great mopey, depressing, hang-my-head song.
3. When you're in lust: This one's hard (no pun intended). Usually it's just turning on the TV to drown out any, er, extraneous noise. If I had to choose, maybe Gloria by Them (Van Morrison many, many years ago).
4. Exercising: Born to Run by Bruce Springsteen.
5. Driving/riding in the car: Open Road Song by Eve 6. Lots of energy, great lyrics and it's about driving. Runner up: Going Down the Road Feeling Bad by The Greatful Dead (only recently replaced by Open Road Song thanks to my kids)

LEt's see.

1. Getting in mood to party: steely dan, bob marley are usually good for this. If its a sunny day and you can see the ocean, then throw Jimmy Buffett into the mix - top of the list, Bertha by the Dead

2. Depressed: Badfinger's "Straight Up" ablum...all of it....straight through - though "Take it All" is the song that usually hits me

3. Lust: hmmmmm Bob Marley works well here too; as does steely dan, but also good R&B always does the trick or good old school blues or jazz

4. Exercising - ok, I may catch shit for this, but Pat Benetar's "Heartbreaker" is great music to work out too.

5. Driving: Has to be the dashboard-drumming song of all time, the Allman Bros, Ramblin' Man. (Though I have a soft spot for Hammett's runner up!)

It's a little late, but here's my random list:

1. Getting in the mood to party: "If I had a Rocket Launcher" by Bruce Cockburn. (Well, maybe I do, maybe I don't)

2. When you're depressed: "Once and For All" from the soundtrack from the musical Newsies (...once and for all there's a fire inside me that won't stop burnin'...)

3. When you're in lust: "Closer to Free" by the Bodeans

4. Exercising: "Ziggy Stardust" by David Bowie

5. Driving/riding in the car: A coda from the Tchaikovsky ballet, The Sleeping Beauty.

I guess that's the problem with the shuffle function for these memes. Sometimes they can be fun, other times they just don't make sense. In reality, I rarely listen to classical music in the car because there are so many passages that are drowned out by road noise. And Ziggy Stardust is not a workout song.

G - I love Pat Benetar. No shit from me.
