RIP Momma Black Widow Spider: She died on 7-31-06. I think most of the babies have died too because they aren't moving at all, but I have seen one moving this morning.
Lemon Tree: The lemons are still growing great and have tripled in size since the last update. They love this excessive heat and humidity. I can't wait for the lemonade! The weird combination of spider webs has been abandoned. Maybe Praying Mantis ate the spider? But while I was in NC the tree got blown over in a big storm. I haven't seen Praying Mantis since then.
School: The first day of school is Aug. 11. What is the logic of starting the school year with a half day on a Friday? It must be the same logic that made the last day of last school year a half day on a Monday.

I soooo agree with the half day on friday thing. Oh! And did you know, this year we can get their school stuff tax free the 4th, 5th, and 6th? Clothes, shoes, and supplies.
Not at all sorry to see the ultimate bitch spider gone. Hope she's not just playing possum.
School should be from after Labor Day to just before Memorial Day. Period. Let the kids (and teachers) have a full summer. :-)

Hey Rae Ann:
Sorry Ms. Spider is gone:( Glad to know the lemon tree is doing well. My dwarf citrus damner died from the 113 degree weather a coupla weeks back, but now in the 80-90 degree range she just loves it:)
Hi Rae,
You forgot
pay a flying visit to Q when you've got a moment or two
Hope yoy having agreat day!
A half day at the end of the week sounds like a recipe for disaster. I guess they figure they'll get the chatter and the settling in over with so Monday they can start good and proper but it seems abit of a goofy thing to me.
I'm glad your lemons are thriving in the heat as my plums are taking a beating. They're all tiny and scraggly looking.
Hey thanks for visit, and magical comments!
As to logic of school year, you obviously not a teacher, lol!
It means they can claim for the whole week even if schook starts on friday, just as they claimed for the whole week when scgool ended on the Monday.
On a less cynical note, it gives schools and teachers time to catch up with themselves (their life) and time to catch up with school life, school/academic updates, and children/pupil records, data et al.
What surprises me is to hear kids go back to school on 11th Aug, you can't get kids back to school in the Mediterranean before end Sept or early October. You lot can't love your kids half as much with your busy lifes, as Mediterraneans (mums & kids) who would pack up and go the the seaside for three months, only dad having to commute to the big City (or inland) to work. And even then only the minimum hours required, so that he could spend the afternoons on the beach with the kids.
Alas, those were the days. Are we progressing, does progress mean loss of certain values or privileges ... and on, and on, and
Hoping you awake smiling to this gorgeous friday
kat, I'm getting ready to go shopping today. Can't pass up a sales tax holiday!
Mahndisa, sorry to hear about your citrus tree and the heat. If it got that hot here I'm sure mine would be sad too. They sure are thirsty though not matter what the weather so be sure and keep it watered.
pete, I'd love to have a plum tree, but I think my luck with them would match my bad luck with peach trees.
Q, thanks! Yeah, that Mediterranean lifestyle sounds pretty nice. But be sure that we can also have quality time with our kids even during the school year. Though the hanging out at the beach does sound better. lol
It's an hours thing. Each district or state has a mandae of how many class hours students must spend. With federal, state and local holidays in teh mix, sometimes it falls this way. At least that's why they did it in my old district when I taught.
I missed reading your blogs while I was on vacation. I'm catching up right now!
