Usually at night, after everyone else has settled into bed, I go into my 'secret room' and listen to music and write or work on artwork. Usually I'll start with the radio to see if anything good is playing. If not, I'll put on a cd. Last night I turned on the radio and the first song I heard was "Mary Jane's Last Dance" by Tom Petty ('last dance with Mary Jane, one more time to kill the pain'). I thought that was interesting. Then Steppenwolf's "Magic Carpet Ride" came on. I thought, 'What a funny sequence of songs.' I'm posting those lyrics on the lyrics blog because I really like them even though I never really paid much attention to them before. And then ZZ Top's "Gimme All Your Lovin'" came on, and that one just cracked me up. It's just so 80s, you know? But I have to confess that when those ZZ Top videos came out I wanted to grow up and be one of those trashy girls. Obviously, that didn't happen.
Just when I thought it couldn't get any funnier Def Leppard's "Pour Some Sugar On Me" came on. When I heard 'Lookin' like a tramp, like a video vamp' I thought, 'wow, whoever put all these songs together is funny.' I have to say that "Pour Some Sugar" is probably one of the most pornographic songs that's been widely popular. 'I'm hot, sticky sweet'? That's nasty! 'You gotta tease a little, squeeze a little, tease a little more'? Whoa! 'You got the peaches, I got the cream'? That sounds like a scene out of 9 1/2 Weeks. Nasty, nasty, nasty! But I love it! LOL Talk about a magic carpet ride. Then "Magic" by the Cars came on. 'I know you're getting twisted And you can't calm down'? Yeah, really. I had about as much as I could take so I decided to put on a nice soothing cd so I'd be able to get to sleep later.
Who comes up with those playlists anyway?

Well, at least you could sleep. What about the rest of us? That's twice in two days you did this to us. No wonder they burned those rock and roll records back in the 50's. It's the devil's music.

Sad thing is, you got lucky. Formats nowadays are tighter than ever. Some like "Jack" are full of more songs, but tight noneteless. I actually miss the old days of free form radio when DJ's used to weave music together so beautifully it was art. In fact, Tom Petty's song "The Last DJ" is about Jim Ladd, a local radio icon who is currently the only guy in LA radio to be allowed to program his own show and still does it masterfully! Unfortunately, art doesn't sell in a mass market world!

mr g, I love "Jack" and I usually try it first now, but this group of songs was on the 'classic' rock station. I like the female dj who works the night shift there because the music then is often really good, but she talks too much and that bothers me.
mike, you're right. I saw them in concert in 1988 and they played most of their "Hysteria" tracks, plus their older hits. You're forgiven for early morning word repetition. lol

For years...I have moved to the melody...but have difficulties listening to the lyrics...unless they are easily heard and older to where I know the words...(smiling)Your blog on lyrics truly helps me.
The ones though you listed...I am definitely familar with....since that decade was my time in music and the world. (smiling)
My daughter has a link on her blog of Virgin Radio in London...great tunes...if you love good old rock and roll....etc. Awesome radio station for your computer.

(She's also the sister-in-law to Danny Elfman, but that's not the point.)
The most perverted popular song has to be "Relax" by Frankie Goes to Hollywood. Great song, but I'm shocked that it was ever played on the radio in the 80's.

As an adult I find more and more of the songs I grew up on turn out to be filthy. Def Leppard was no surprise, I was in high school or Junior High or something when it came out and my radar for dirty songs was at its' apex, but I look back to songs from the 50's and sixties and those older tin pan alley and musical songs as well. "Will you still love me tomorrow?" it's about putting out! I didn't get it as a kid, but listen to it. And older, how about Honeysuckle Rose or Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered?
